Basic Language Program

Welcome to the Basic Language Webpage!

The mission of the Basic Language Program is to create a student-centered atmosphere that strives not only to provide the best education for the learning of Spanish as a second language in the Southwest of the United States, but also to create greater understanding among all cultures.

We are very fortunate to be in this geographical region of our country. First of all, the proximity to our neighbors to the south, Mexico, approximately 60 miles away, makes our connection to the border population a plus. Secondly, we are privileged to be among a Hispanic community who is actively involved in the Tucson area. Finally, we have the distinction of being a quality language department with a combination of young and experienced qualified instructors. Many of our teachers from the United States have studied and lived in a Spanish speaking country. Others are native speakers from almost every country of the Hispanic speaking world who are committed to the teaching of the Hispanic language and culture with passion.

The Spanish Basic Language Program offers the following courses:

Spanish 101: Beginning Spanish First Semester Spanish, for students with no previous study or experience of Spanish

Spanish 102: Elementary Spanish - Second Semester Spanish which is a continuation of Spanish 101, for students with one year of previous study of Spanish or by placement exam;

Spanish 201: Second Year Spanish - Third Semester Spanish which is a continuation of Spanish 101 and 102 or by placement exam;

Spanish 202:    Second Year Spanish - Fourth Semester Spanish Continuation of Spanish 101, 102, and 201 or by placement exam

We also offer accelerated classes Spanish 205(combination of Spanish 101 and 102) and Spanish 206 (combination of Spanish 201 and 202

Spanish 251: Intermediate Spanish.  This course is the bridge between the Basic Language Program courses and the Upper Division classes. It is designed to improve reading and writing strategies, with a major emphasis on composition through literature.
