IN MEMORIAM

Donald S. Castro

Professor Don Castro was an early and very strong friend and advocate for Studies in Latin American Popular Culture. It was back in the early 1980s when we co-founded the journal that Don stepped forward to help us navigate unchartered waters. For many years throughout the 1980s we would rent exhibit space at the Latin American Studies Association and the Popular Culture Association meetings to promote the journal. Don was one of the three or four members of our editorial team that would regularly spend time at our booth while we attended sessions to listen to scholarly lectures on popular culture and to encourage some of the presenters to submit articles for consideration for publication in our fledging journal. Without the backing of a professional organization, the support that Don generously offered us was not only deeply appreciated but crucial to our success. Don also expressed his support by publishing his fine scholarship on Argentine popular culture in early issues of the journal. Don then served for many years as our Book Review Editor until his passing last year. We all miss his enthusiasm, good cheer, and utter dedication to the journal.
