Renate Schulz came to the U.S. from Germany in 1958. Sheholds a Ph.D. in Foreign Language Education from The Ohio State University. Beforecoming to the University of Arizona in 1981 she taught in the Peace Corps inNigeria, at Otterbein College (Ohio), at the State University College of NewYork at Buffalo, and at the University of Arkansas. She also held visitingappointments at the United States Air Force Academy and at the Universidad delas Americas in Puebla, Mexico. Her research interests lie in the areas ofsecond language acquisition, language teaching, testing, and foreign languageteacher development. She has lectured and published widely on those topics.

She is a past President of theAATG, a past Editor of Die Unterrichtspraxis,and currently a member of the editorial advisory boards of the Modern Language Journal, Die Unterrichtspraxis,and the Electronic Journal, Zeitschrift für interkulturellenFremdsprachenunterricht: Didaktik und Methodik im Bereich Deutsch alsFremdsprache. She has received numerous awards, among them the Bundesverdienstkreuzerster Klasse from the President of the Federal Republic of Germany. In herfree time she enjoys going to the theater, hiking in the desert and exploring Indiancountry.
