 ABOUT THE ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE

The Alliance Française is a non-profit cultural and educational organization, a world-wide network which has exposed thousands to French culture, civilization and language. It was founded in 1883 in Paris. Worldwide, the Alliance Française network includes 1,056 Alliances in 134 countries.

In the United States, the Federation currently has 141 affiliates in 45 states. Through educational and cultural programs, they aim at encouraging cultural exchange and mutual understanding between French-speaking peoples and Americans of all walks of life.


ABOUT THE ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE DE TUCSON

The Alliance Française de Tucson was formally founded in 1973 by Madame Alice Rufenacht. It is a non-profit organization, independent, and supported by dues and donations. There are currently over 80 members.The Alliance holds monthly meetings during the school year, featuring speakers on topics such as Dordogne, Brittany, Colette, Aragon, paleolithic cave art, the castles of the Loire Valley, Impressionist paintings, or the Internet.

The Alliance also awards books to the top two students of French in 10 area high schools, sponsors scholarships, and administers the French National Essay contest in the Tucson area.


SCHOLARSHIPS

The Alliance Française of Tucson is the only chapter in the United States that offers scholarships to high school students; it has been doing so since 1978. The program is supported by fund raising activities such as luncheons and donations. Tucson- area students spend part of the summer living wilh a French family. They give a report to the Alliance at the September meeting.

SCHOLARSHIP TO BENEFIT UA UNDERGRADUATE MAJORS IN FRENCH
The Albert Anavy and Frank M. Chambers Memorial Scholarship

 

Sources:

Family, friends and associates of the late Albert Anavy, Professor of Physics and Chemistry at the College International of the American University, in Beirut (Lebanon), and the late Dr. Frank M. Chambers, Professor of French at The University of Arizona until 1978.

Eligibility:

Undergraduate seniors majoring in French at the University of Arizona who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and have expressed the desire to make a career teaching French. Special consideration will be given to students interested in pursuing a Master's degree in French/Francophone literatures or linguistics in the Department. Candidates must be full-time students. They are selected by a committee of French faculty appointed by the Head of the UA Department of French and Italian, subject to the approval of the faculty as a whole and the Executive Committee of the Alliance Française de Tucson.

Value, Number and Duration:

$100 annually, number and duration as decided by the Executive Committee of the Alliance française de Tucson.

FRENCH NATIONAL CONTEST

This essay contest is aimed at students of French in American high schools, universities and Alliances Francaises. Prizes include trips to France, language classes at the Alliance Française de Paris, monetary awards and prize books. Teachers of the winning students also receive prizes.
