::Graduate Program Information::

The Department offers two options at the M.A. level: A Masters of Arts in French Literature (Option I) and Masters of Arts in French as a Foreign Language (Option II). Students normally proceed through the M.A. program in four semesters.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GATships) are typically available although they are contingent on budget, academic records, and reports of satisfactory progress. All GATships include tuition waivers.

A dynamic group of faculty offer courses in all the major research areas and periods from the Early Modern period through the contemporary period in France and the Francophone World. A variety of critical approaches drawing on history, anthropology, feminism, postcolonial theory, sociology, linguistics, and cultural studies are represented in courses offered at the graduate level.

Graduate students enjoy a supportive atmosphere in which graduate representatives are invited to serve on a variety of committees at every level within the department, participate actively in outreach activities and benefit from focused career placement efforts as they exit the program.

Summer teaching positions are available for advanced students at the UA and with the Arizona in Paris summer exchange program and with the Niger summer session. Qualified graduate students are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities for educational exchange in Paris at University de Paris VII and at the Dartmouth Summer Institute.
