The University of Arizona

.:: DEGREE REQUIREMENTS & OPTIONS IN ITALIAN ::.

In addition to a traditional program focusing on Italian Language and Literature, the department offers an option in Italian Studies, with advanced courses taught in English. With the exception of TRAD102, Italian 101,102,and 102z, all courses offered by the italian section, whether in Italian or in English, count twoard either B.A. option. Courses taught in English have no prerequisites and can be taken in conjunction with, or after, 1st and 2nd year Italian.

Option A: ITALIAN language and literature (taught in Italian)

Major: 32 units required:

Minor: 20 units, including: ITAL 201,202,301,302,310 and 320

9 upper division units are required from ITAL 301 to 499

Majors and Minors in ITALIAN (as opposed to ITALIAN STUDIES) are expected to do their course work (reading and writing) in Italian. For this purpose, courses taught in English have bilingual texts for the literature component (usually on reserve in the library) and count toward the major in either option. Upper-division courses taught in Italian have as a prerequisite Ital 202.

Option B: ITALIAN STUDIES (with advanced courses taught in english).

Major: 32 units, including: ITAL 201 and 202

Minor: 20 units including: ITAL 201,202

9 upper-division units are required from ITAL 301 to ITAL 499

Majors in ITALIAN STUDIES may complete all upper-division units (required and elective courses) in English. Courses taught in Italian, however, also count toward this major, as do all courses taught in the Arizona Program in Italy. There are no prerequisites for the upper-division courses taught in English, which may be taken in conjunction with Ital 201-202.
